U.S. Intelligence links Colombian ex-Pres. Alvaro Uribe to Medellin Cartels

Pres. Álvaro Uribe of Colombia (2002-2011), conservative strongman against the FARC and a staunch U.S. ally in the region, was closely connected to the Medellín cartels, from his rise to power as governor of Antioquía. Human rights groups and even the U.S. State Department accused Uribe of fostering cozy ties between criminal paramilitary groups involved in narcotrafficking. This U.S. intel brief identifies Uribe’s early connections to the Escobar cartel.
